As my heritage is Irish (with a wee bit of Norse thrown in), my interest is in Celtic/Gaelic living history faires. What could be more fun than getting together to put on a good swordfight or historical battle re-enactment for the faire patrons?
Being a member of the Highlander Warriors gives me the oppotunity to enjoy faire at its best. Check out the guild and the schedule at WWW.DIARMID.COM.
Here's a bit about my faire character (an Irish mercenary who made his way to the Scottish Highlands):
"I am Finnian Ó Saoraidhe, born the son of a simple but proud blacksmith from Kells, in the year 1517. From my earliest days, I can remember my father teaching me the art of working iron and steel into tools that shaped not only the land, but the course of men's lives as well. It was almost magic to me how the metal could be transformed by my father's hands. It was to be my lot to carry on this trade and pass this knowledge to my sons in the course of time.
But growing up on the border of the Pale, it became apparent that a man who could wield the steel with skill could find himself in a position to control not only his destiny, but those around him as well. And so my days were spent not only forging the metal, but teaching myself how to use my wares to my advantage; honing skills that seemed to come easily and naturally, as if the steel were a part of me.
It was not long before my young man's pride and wanderlust lead me to leave my home in search of the adventure and fortune that I believed were mine for the taking. In truth, my skill with the steel did open paths to more than I had ever believed I could have. But each time I sold myself to the service of one Lord or another, I lost a small piece of who I was. Eventually, I left my isle in search of new places to ply my trade where greater fortune might be had. Soon I found myself in Scotland; and in the service of one Reiver family or another - moving along as I tended to wear out my welcome with greater ease as the years passed. I left the Borders after a time, and began wandering the Highlands, looking for yet another master for my mercenary trade.
But instead I found Diarmid Campbell: a man more concerned with how I would uphold honor, truth and justice, rather than whatever skill with a sword I might have. And it has been in his service that I have once again found that young boy who sat in awe of his father's skill. I still wield my sword to earn my way - but now it is with a much higher purpose and meaning than I have ever known in any battle I have ever fought."
